A court in Kazan, the capital of the Russian republic of Tatarstan, has sentenced two former police officers in a high-profile case of alleged torture by police.
The Kazan court found former police officers Ilshat Garifullin and Ramil Nigmatzyanov guilty of illegally arresting a local citizen who died after allegedly being beaten and raped with a bottle while in police custody.
Garifullin was sentenced to 2 1/2 years in a minimum-security labor camp, while Nigmatziyanov received two years in a similar penitentiary.
The March incident sparked protests across Russia and led to the dismissal of Tatarstan's Interior Minister Asgat Safarov.
Four other former police officers have been charged with torturing the victim to death. Their trials are pending.
