Canadian prosecutors say a man accused of driving down and killing four members of a Pakistani-Canadian Muslim family will be facing terrorism charges.
Nathaniel Veltman, 20, also faces four first-degree murder charges and one attempted murder charge.
Police said Veltman intentionally targeted the family because of their faith, running them over in a "premeditated" attack that sparked outrage throughout Canada.
The June 6 attack took place in London, some 200 kilometers southwest of Toronto.
Salman Afzaal, 46, his 44-year-old wife Madiha Salman, their 15-year-old daughter Yumna, and her 74-year-old grandmother, Talat Afzaal, were killed while on an evening walk.
The couple’s nine-year-old son, Fayez, was seriously injured but is expected to recover.
The upgraded charges were laid as Veltman made a court appearance via video on June 14.
The man, who police have said has no prior convictions, has yet to enter a plea.
