Turkish Citizen Remanded In Kyrgyzstan On Assault Charge

BISHKEK -- A Turkish man charged with beating a female colleague in Bishkek has been ordered held in detention for two months, RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service reports.

Bishkek's Birinchi Mai district court sanctioned the detention for Turkish national Yilmaz Gunes on April 22.

Gunes, an employee of the Beta-Stores-3 supermarket in Bishkek, was arrested on April 16 after his colleague Cholpon Orozbaeva was hospitalized because she had been severely beaten.

Orozbaeva told RFE/RL that Gunes attacked her after they argued over a business-related issue.

Gunes denies any wrongdoing. His lawyer, Nurshat Kasymov, told RFE/RL that it is not clear why the court has not called for medical and forensic tests or yet examined video footage from security cameras in the store.
