Power Struggle: Russia's Belgorod Goes Dark As Ukraine Shows Kyiv Heating Plant Damage

Russia has hit the Darnytsia plant five times this winter, with the latest strike arriving on February 3 when five ballistic missiles targeted the facility.

Sixty foreign diplomats were given a tour of the damaged plant on February 4. The visit was organized so Ukraine's allies "can see with their own eyes what the aggressor state is doing and bring this information to their capitals," Ukraine's Deputy Foreign Minister Yevhen Perebyinis said.

Officials say the station, which is now largely destroyed, will take "considerable time" to repair and begin heating Kyiv residents once more.

According to the director of the plant, restoration crews are active around the clock, but the work has been hampered by freezing temperatures.

More than 1,100 homes in Kyiv remain without heat, according to city authorities, as temperatures remain below freezing in one of the harshest winters Kyiv has faced in years.

“The damage, the scale of the destruction here is simply shocking,” Heiko Thoms, Germany's ambassador to Ukraine, said during the tour. “There is no excuse for this. It is important to attract additional support. We must somehow find a way to end this war, which is only going on because Russia wants it to."

The blackout in the Russian city marks the second time Ukraine has reportedly targeted the city's power grid in recent weeks in apparent revenge attacks for Russia's ongoing strikes on Ukraine's energy network.
