A gunman and a police officer have been killed in a shootout in Ukraine's eastern city of Kharkiv near the city council building.

According to an August 20 statement from Ukraine's National Police, the unidentified gunman opened fire overnight on a group of police officers near the Kharkiv City Council.

Authorities say police returned fire and killed the gunman, who wounded a police officer and a security guard at the city council building.

The wounded police officer died later on August 20 at a hospital while the security guard was hospitalized in stable condition.
