Investigators search home of ex-lawmaker, owner of Pryamiy TV:

By RFE/RL's Ukrainian Service

Officers of Ukraine's State Bureau of Investigations (DBR) have searched the home of former lawmaker and Pryamiy television channel owner Volodymyr Makeyenko.

The DBR press service told RFE/RL on November 7 that the searches were linked to investigations into the purchase of the TV channel.

It added that details of the searches could not be released due to it being an ongoing situation.

Pryamiy issued a statement saying that its editorial board saw the searches as "an attack on freedom of speech."

Media reports said in late June that former President Petro Poroshenko planned to buy Pryamiy from Makeyenko in case Makeyenko "has problems."

During his unsuccessful reelection bid earlier this year, Poroshenko enjoyed enormous coverage on Pryamiy and local media have reported he is the ultimate owner of the channel, though he denies it.

The DBR has questioned Poroshenko twice as a witness over the sale of Pryamiy and alleged tax evasion during the transaction. A billionaire confectioner, Poroshenko and his party ran on a pro-European, anti-Russian ticket in the July parliamentary elections.
