As our news desk reports, Petro Poroshenko has officially been declared the winner of Ukraine's presidential election:
The chairman of Ukraine's Central Election Commission on May 26 said Petro Poroshenko has been elected president of Ukraine.
Commission Chairman Mykhaylo Ohendovskyy told a press briefing in Kyiv that there will be no need for a second round of the presidential election as Poroshenko has received enough votes to be declared the winner outright.
Ohendovskiy said, "Ukraine's new president, Petro Poroshenko, was elected on May 25."
The commission said that, with more than 90 percent of the vote processed, Poroshenko had more than 54 percent of the vote, followed by former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko with 13 percent. (AFP, Interfax, and UNIAN)

"Due to the latest developments, which are unfolding so fast and so aggressively, we are compelled to appeal to Russian Federation President Vladimir Vladimirovych Putin personally and to the entire Russian people."
"Donetsk and its suburbs in the nearest future can be on the verge of humanitarian catastrophe, that's why we have to appeal to the entire Russian nation for any help they can give us."
"Currently, there is a full-scale military confrontation going on. To this moment, according to our information, our fighters have destroyed one enemy helicopter."

An update from our news desk on the fighting in Donetsk:
At least two Ukrainian helicopter gunships mounted a heavy attack on May 26 on the rebel-held international airport terminal at Donetsk, firing rockets and cannon as militants shot at them from the ground.
Western journalists on the ground reported the Mi-24 helicopters strike the building of "Sergei Prokofiev International Airport" and also hit targets near the runway, sending up a new plume of heavy, black smoke.
Earlier on May 26, Vladislav Seleznyov, a spokesman for Kyiv's anti-terrorist operation, said the military launched an air strike on gunmen occupying the airport after an ultimatum to them to leave expired.
The aiport shut down May 26 after armed men demanded that soldiers guarding the perimeter of the airport be withdrawn.
The development comes after the leader of the separatist, self-styled Donetsk People's Republic declared martial law in Ukraine's Donetsk region on May 26.
