The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe said in a statement today that the last time it had been in touch with the four-member team was yesterday evening, when the monitors were on a routine patrol east of the city of Donetsk.
The statement said that both the Ukrainian government and local authorities have been informed of the situation.
An OSCE spokesman told the BBC that the monitors, all men, were Turkish, Swiss, Estonian, and Danish.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but rebel groups have previously kidnapped OSCE monitors in Ukraine.
