An AP reporter says he witnessed a helicopter going down in the area.
There has been no official confirmation of the reports.
Ukrainian media today reported intensive fighting near Slovyansk, in the Donetsk region.
It came after the separatists raided a barracks of the volunteer National Guard in the neighboring Luhansk region.
Both sides say they suffered losses in the overnight fighting.
Petro Poroshenko, the winner of Ukraine's presidential election, has vowed to continue a military operation to uproot the separatists and bring the crisis in the east to a quick end.
Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk said on May 28 that if Russia stopped supporting the rebels, the crisis would be resolved "in a week or two."
Moscow denies being behind the separatist insurgency.
