Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said a "crime was committed" when Mikheil Saakashvili, the former Georgian president and ex-governor of Ukraine's Odesa region, crossed the border into Ukraine from Poland on September 10. Responding to Poroshenko's comments from the western Ukrainian city of Lviv, Saakashvili said he crossed the border with a legal Ukrainian passport. On September 11, Saakashvili told reporters it was crime to have been stripped of his Ukrainian citizenship in the first place. It was revoked in July by the Ukrainian president, reportedly on the grounds that Saakashvili failed to mention there was a criminal case against him in Georgia.
