Uzbek President Islam Karimov has agreed to attend two international conferences on Afghanistan later this year. Karimov met on October 11 with visiting U.S. and German special representatives on Afghanistan -- Marc Grossman and Michael Steiner.

Steiner later said "we are happy the [Uzbek] President has said that Uzbekistan will take part in the two conferences -- in Istanbul on the second of November and on the fifth of December in Bonn."

Grossman maintained that part of those conferences will focus on Afghanistan after 2014, when the U.S. and other foreign forces in Afghanistan complete the draw down.

"We [have to make sure] that we don't repeat the mistake of '89, but stay engaged both in Afghanistan, as well as in the region," he said.
