TASHKENT -- The central bank of Uzbekistan has ordered all banks in the country to halt money wire transfers via Russia's Zolotaya Korona (Golden Crown) company as of April 1.

Representatives of Asia Alliance bank, Invest Finance Bank, and Ipoteka Bank in Tashkent told RFE/RL that no reasons were given to justify the decision.

Thousands of Uzbek migrant workers in Russia have long used the services of Zolotaya Korona to send remittances to their families in Uzbekistan.

They will now be forced to switch to the services of Western Union, Asia Express, and Money Transfer, whose fees are higher.

Officials at Zolotaya Korona have refused to comment on the news.
