Azerbaijan Authorities Void More Votes

(RFE/RL) 13 November 2005 -- Azerbaijan's Central Election Commission has annulled the results of last week's parliamentary poll in a third constituency, amid a probe into allegations of widespread fraud.

The latest ruling affects a constituency where a candidate from President Ilham Aliyev's New Azerbaijan Party, Fikmet Atayev, had been announced the winner. The Election Commission said on 12 November that the result was annulled due to "serious violations."

The Election Commission has indicated that results from 20 of the country's 125 voting constituencies are being probed for possible violations. Opposition groups want the entire election results to be annulled and have threatened nationwide protests unless their demands are met.
