4 January 2006 -- President Hamid Karzai has arrived in the Turkish capital Ankara for the first visit of an Afghan head of state in 48 years.
During his two-day trip, Karzai is expected to meet with President Ahmet Necdet Sezer, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, General Hilmi Ozkok -- the chief of the Turkish military -- and Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul.
The talks are scheduled to focus on rebuilding Afghanistan, where Turkish firms have invested about $130 million.
The last Afghan head of state to visit Turkey was former Afghan King Zahir Shah in 1957. Karzai briefly visited Turkey in 2002 as interim premier.
