EU Criticizes Iran's Human Rights Record

Abdolfattah Soltani, a human rights lawyer whose pending court case is highlighted in the EU statement (file photo) (AFP) BRUSSELS, May 5, 2006 (RFE/RL) -- The EU's current Austrian presidency today expressed "serious concern" about Iran's human rights record.

In its statement, the EU highlights the indictment of human rights activist Abdolfattah Soltani and calls on Tehran to ensure he receives a fair trial.


It also condemns the recent rise in the number of executions in Iran. Apart from the EU and the countries assured of membership, the statement is also signed by Ukraine and Moldova.
