U.S., Montenegro Establish Diplomatic Ties

(RFE/RL) August 15, 2006 -- The United States has established diplomatic relations with Montenegro after an exchange of letters between President George W. Bush and Montenegrin President Filip Vujanovic.

The State Department announced the move today. The statement says the United States welcomes Montenegro's commitment to be an active and responsible member of the Euro-Atlantic family and the broader international community.

Montenegro declared independence from its union with Serbia on June 3 and became a UN member on June 28.
