Former Iranian Lawmakers Call For Activist's Release

(RFE/RL) October 20, 2006 -- Some 80 former Iranian reformist lawmakers are calling for the release of one of their colleagues, Ali Akbar Musavi Khoeini, who has been in jail since June 12.
The call is contained in an open letter posted on at least two independent Iranian websites.

A prominent human rights defender, Musavi Khoeini was arrested during a peaceful women’s rights gathering in Tehran.

The charges brought against him are unclear, and authorities have not allowed him to meet with a lawyer.

The open letter's 81 signatories say Musavi Khoeini's detention has no legal basis and that he should therefore be freed at once.

Human Rights Watch and other prominent rights groups have expressed concern over Musavi Khoeini's health and called for his release.
