Azerbaijan, NATO Discuss Closer Ties

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev pictured during his trip to Brussels (Council of Europe) November 8, 2006 -- Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev today told NATO that his country wants closer ties with the alliance.

Speaking after talks at NATO headquarters in Brussels, he also said the growing importance of energy supplies from the region was adding a "new dimension" to their relations.


NATO Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer said he had discussed with Aliyev the security of energy supplies to Europe.
