Fire Kills Three At Russian Psychiatric Hospital

(RFE/RL) May 4, 2007 -- Russian officials say a fire at a psychiatric hospital has killed three people and injured about 10 others.

It's not clear what caused the early morning fire at the hospital in the southern Rostov region. The local prosecutor's office has opened a criminal investigation.

The blaze comes just weeks after a fire at a Russian nursing home killed 63 mostly elderly people.

Officials blame violations of fire safety regulations and improper construction for the high number of fire deaths.
