Dozens Of Taliban Reported Killed In Afghanistan

(RFE/RL) May 12, 2007 -- Afghan officials say NATO-led forces and Afghan troops have driven out the Taliban from a southern district after a weeklong battle in which more than 70 militants were killed.

An intelligence department statement says the Nari Saraj district of Helmand Province is now under government control.

The NATO-led International Security Assistance Force was not immediately able to confirm the statement.

Nari Saraj lies some 25 kilometers from Sangin district, where Afghan officials said a U.S. air strike killed more than 30 civilians earlier this week.
