UNITED NATIONS -- A group of U.S.-based human rights organizations has appealed to the Geneva-based United Nations Human Rights Council to press the Iranian authorities to allow international human rights monitors in the country.
Representatives of Amnesty International, the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran, Student World Assembly and Where is My Vote, NY, held a silent vigil in front of the UN headquarters in New York in support of nonviolent protesters in Iran and later convened a press conference.
The speakers challenged the global community to press the UN Human Rights Council during its Universal Periodic Review of Iran on February 15 to issue a strong report that insists Iran comply with international human rights laws and permit UN human rights experts immediate access to the country.
During the vigil approximately 200 activists were dressed in black and wore gags to condemn the use of detention, torture, and execution of nonviolent protestors in Iran.
