UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the foreign ministers of Sweden and Denmark were delayed arriving for a major international conference in the Afghan capital after a rocket attack on Kabul's airport.
The Swedish Foreign Ministry has confirmed that Foreign Minister Carl Bildt and Ban, who was traveling on the same plane, were forced to land at the U.S. Bagram military base and were flown by helicopter to Kabul.
Danish media, meanwhile, reported that a plane transporting Foreign Minister Lene Espersen was also unable to land at Kabul airport and was diverted to Kazakhstan.
NATO said in a statement today that its forces killed and detained several Taliban militants believed to be "in the final stages of preparation for attacks on the Kabul conference" late on July 19.
