MOSCOW -- Moscow Helsinki Group Chairwoman Lyudmila Alekseyeva has called on Germany to put a visa ban on Russian officials found responsible for the death of lawyer Sergei Magnitsky, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.
Alekseyeva made the plea during a meeting between Helsinki Group representatives and German President Christian Wulff and German parliamentary deputies in Moscow on October 13.
One of Russia's most prominent rights activists, Alekseyeva told RFE/RL that her request is supported by chief editors Dmitry Muratov of the weekly "Novaya gazeta" and Yevgeniya Albats of the magazine "New Times."
Magnitsky, who was representing Hermitage Capital Management when he was arrested and put in pretrial detention, died in a Moscow jail in November.
His lawyers and relatives say he died because prison authorities did not provide him with medical care when he was ill.
Magnitsky's death led to the firing of at least 20 prison officials and changes in laws regarding the detention of suspects for financial crimes.
