In Pakistan, the Supreme Court chief justice who was sacked 16 months ago when then-leader Pervez Musharraf imposed emergency rule, has resumed his work.
Iftikhar Chaudhry's formal return to the high court followed mass protests this month by opposition parties and activist lawyers demanding an independent judiciary.
The Supreme Court said in a statement that Chaudhry had resumed his duties on March 22 by approving dates for upcoming hearings and appointing several panels of jurists.
The government last week said Chaudhry could return as Supreme Court chief following the retirement of chief justice Abdul Hameed Dogar, who was sworn in after Musharraf declared emergency rule in 2007. Dogar retired on March 21.
Chaudhry was removed by Musharraf over fears the judge would disqualify Musharraf from contesting a presidential election while Musharraf was still Pakistan's military chief.
