A strong earthquake, with a magnitude of 6.3, has hit the Hindu Kush region of northeastern Afghanistan.
Reports say the tremor, which struck shortly before midnight at 2351 Afghan time late on September 17, caused buildings in the Afghan capital Kabul and areas of neighboring Pakistan to shake. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the location of the quake was 75 kilometers southeast of Faizabad, in Afghanistan's Badakhshan Province, 115 kilometers northwest of Chitral, Pakistan, 130 kilometers southwest of Khorugh, Tajikistan, and 265 kilometers northeast of Kabul.
The U.S. agency said the depth of the tremor was nearly 200 kilometers below the Earth's surface.
