Police in Cyprus say they have stepped up their search for an alleged member of a Russian spy ring who vanished shortly after being released on bail on the Mediterranean island.
Police today said they had no indications yet that Christopher Robert Metsos, who says he is Canadian, had left the island or crossed over into the breakaway Turkish northern sector, which is recognized by no country but Turkey.
Metsos is wanted in the United States on charges he supplied money to the alleged spy ring who operated in the United States.
Ten alleged Russian spies were arrested in U.S. on June 27. Metsos was arrested in Cyprus the following day as he tried to leave the island.
A Cypriot judge freed him on $33,000 bail, but he failed to show on June 30 for a required meeting with police.
Nine of the suspected spies are set to appear in U.S. courts today, where they will ask for their release during the investigation. A tenth defendant has already had his bail request rejected.
Russia's Foreign Ministry said Moscow, which has confirmed that some of the suspects are Russian, would offer diplomatic help to its citizens.
