Two Policemen Shot Dead In Daghestan

Gunmen killed two police officers during a road patrol early today in Russia's North Caucasus republic of Daghestan.

A spokesman for Daghestan's Interior Ministry said that the attack took place in the provincial capital, Makhachkala.

AP quotes the spokesman as saying that when police stopped the car to check the passengers' documents, three men opened fire on the officers. One policeman died on the spot and the second after being rushed to a hospital.

Russian authorities are struggling to put down a Muslim insurgency in the North Caucasus, which includes Daghestan, Ingushetia, and Chechnya.
