An Afghan-born woman, who migrated to Canada with her family nearly two decades ago, has won a seat in Canada's parliament.
Maryam Monsef, a member of the Liberal Party of Canada, won the seat over her Conservative Party rival in October 19 parliamentary elections.
Monsef, 30, who picked up the seat in the Peterborough-Kawartha district, also becomes the Ontario constituency's youngest lawmaker.
Monsef came to Canada with her widowed mother and two sisters as refugees fleeing the Taliban in 1996. She was 11 at the time.
Monsef is involved in charity projects that raise money to support women and girls in Afghanistan.
She co-founded the Red Pashmina Campaign, which raised over $150,000 to promote women's education in Afghanistan.
The Liberal Party led by Justin Trudeau won the elections, toppling Conservatives with the promise of change.
