Afghan Peace Envoy Assassinated In Suicide Attack

A suicide bomber has assassinated an Afghan peace envoy and his son in the northeastern province of Konar.

Police said Maulavi Mohammad Hashem Munib, the head of the High Peace Council in the province, was attacked on his way home from Friday Prayers on April 6.

Munib was killed on the spot, while his son died in a hospital where he was being treated for his injuries.

Konar, which borders Pakistan, is a stronghold of the Taliban-led militancy against President Hamid Karzai's government and its Western allies.

The High Peace Council works to bring Taliban fighters to the negotiating table.

Its national head, former President Burhanuddin Rabbani, was assassinated last year by a purported Taliban attacker who hid a bomb in his turban.
