U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has returned to work after a month-long absence due to medical reasons.

She was greeted on January 7 by colleagues at the State Department, who presented her with the humorous gift of a protective football helmet.

Her return to work comes after she fell ill with a stomach virus on December 7.

The illness forced her to cancel a planned visit to North Africa and the Middle East and left her severely dehydrated.

While at home, she fainted and fell and suffered a concussion.

During a follow-up examination, doctors discovered a blood clot in a vein that runs between the skull and the brain behind her right ear and ordered her to be hospitalized.

She was released from the hospital on January 2.
