Georgian Defense Minister Loses Deputy Prime Minister Post

Irakly Alasania

Georgian Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili has relieved Defense Minister Irakly Alasania of his duties as first deputy prime minister.

Alasania had held both posts.

Alasania told journalists late on January 22 that he had a "very tough talk" with Ivanishvili several days ago regarding the ruling Georgian Dream coalition's potential candidate for October's presidential election scheduled.

It's not clear whom he was speaking about.

Alasania is the leader of the Free Democrats party that is a member of the Georgian Dream coalition.

Activists with the Free Democrats told journalists earlier this month they would like to see Alasania as the party's presidential candidate.
