Doctors say the U.S. congresswoman who was shot in the head during a rampage by a gunman in Arizona in January has been making progress in her recovery.

Dr. Dong Kim, who has been helping rehabilitate Representative Gabrielle Giffords at a hospital in Houston, Texas, said Giffords can now talk in full but short sentences, can walk with assistance, and has been showing positive emotions.

Reports say Giffords, however, still does not remember the January 8 shooting attack in the city of Tucson, Arizona. The attack killed six people and injured more than 10 others.

The alleged gunman this week pleaded not guilty to a 49-count indictment over the attack.
