Iran’s former nuclear negotiator, Hassan Rohani, has announced that he will compete in the country’s presidential election in June.
Rohani announced his election bid on April 11 and accused incumbent President Mahmud Ahmadinejad of needlessly incurring economic sanctions that have crippled Iran.
"I have come forward to save Iran's economy and forge a constructive interaction with the world through a government of wisdom and hope," Iranian media quoted Rohani as saying.
Rohani, a Muslim cleric, was Iran’s chief nuclear negotiator in talks with France, Germany, and Britain between 2003 and 2005.
He resigned after Ahmadinejad won office in 2005.
Ahmadinejad, who is serving his second term as president, is not eligible to run in the upcoming poll.
