Report Says Italian Ship's Crew, Including One Ukrainian, Detained In Tripoli

Italy's Foreign Ministry says it is checking reports that authorities from Libyan ruler Muammar Qaddafi's regime have detained the crew of an Italian ship docked in Tripoli and are preventing the vessel from leaving port.

Italy's ANSA news agency reports that the "Asso 22" from the Naples-based shipping company Augusta Offshore has eight Italians, two Indians, and one Ukrainian crew member aboard.

The report says armed men, including one thought to be the Tripoli port commander, detained the crew as Libyan workers on the ship were disembarking on March 19.

The company reportedly has been in contact with the detained crew members.

Italy, Libya's former colonial ruler, has allowed seven military bases in its territory to be used by international forces to enforce a UN no-fly zone over Libya.
