Italy's Berlusconi Survives Confidence Vote

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi

Italy's embattled Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has survived a vote of confidence in parliament.

The vote on October 14, which tallied at 316-301, came amid increasing concerns about Italy's debt crisis and Berlusconi's personal scandals.

On October 13, Berlusconi said the survival of his government is the only credible way for Italy to emerge from its financial crisis.

The confidence vote in the Chamber Of Deputies was called after lawmakers this week failed to approve routine legislation, prompting opposition lawmakers to demand Berlusconi's resignation.

Berlusconi, 75, is also facing pressure over his personal scandals, which include four separate legal cases over allegations of fraud, corruption, and paying for sex with a minor.
