Angelina Jolie Named Honorary Citizen Of Sarajevo

Hollywood actor-director Angelina Jolie

Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie, whose recent feature-film debut as a director put a spotlight on the 1992-1995 Bosnian war, has been named an honorary citizen of Sarajevo.

City officials said Jolie has been invited to a May 3 ceremony to receive the accolade.

The award is given every year to a foreign national who promotes humanity, democracy, and tolerance.

Jolie's 2011 film "In the Land of Blood and Honey" tells the fictional story of a Bosnian Muslim woman and an Orthodox Christian Serbian who have an affair before the war.

They meet again when the woman is a prisoner of a Bosnian Serb army unit commanded by her former lover.

The film has been hailed by most victims' organizations as being objective and sincere.

Bosnia's war claimed some 100,000 lives.
