Two People Arrested In Kazakhstan Over Links To Alleged Slain Terrorists

Officials in Kazakhstan's western region of Atyrau say two local residents have been detained for alleged links with a terrorist group, five members of which were killed by security forces last week.

Prosecutors sanctioned a two-month arrest for the pair.

The counterterrorism operation carried out in the town of Kulsary last week was followed days later by an explosion and gun battle near a police station in the regional capital, Atyrau, that left two policemen injured.

No one has been apprehended for that attack, despite initial reports that as many as six suspects were in custody.

Several counterterrorism operations targeting religious extremists and alleged terrorists have been conducted recently in western Kazakhstan.
