German Chancellor Angela Merkel has expressed support for Moldova's efforts to move closer to the European Union.

Talking to journalists in Berlin after meeting with visiting Moldovan Prime Minister Iurie Leanca, Merkel said she was impressed by Moldova's achievements in reforms and Chisinau's optimism in building a democratic state.

Merkel added that Germany, as well as other EU countries, will provide Chisinau with all the necessary support to solve current economic issues caused by differences between Moldova and Russia.

On July 10 Leanca and Merkel discussed bilateral ties, regional issues, the situation around Moldova's breakaway Transdniester region, and other issues.

Moldova, along with Ukraine and Georgia, signed landmark economic and political accords with the European Union in Brussels last month.

The moves represent a big step toward the West and away from Russia for the three nations.
