Obama To Attend Memorial Service For Victims Of Arizona Shootings

Gabrielle Giffords was shot in the head

U.S. President Barack Obama is due to attend a memorial service today in the western U.S. state of Arizona for the victims of the January 8 deadly shootings.

Six people were killed and 13 wounded, including Representative Gabrielle Giffords, in the attack in Tuscon.

Doctors now say the 40-year-old Democrat is breathing on her own. Although still in critical condition, doctors say Giffords is "holding her own."

The suspect in the shootings, 22-year-old Jared Lee Lougner, has been charged with five federal counts, including the attempted assassination of Giffords.

The tragedy has sparked debate in the United States over gun control and whether heated political debate played any role in the incident.

A CBS News poll, however, found most Americans do not believe the harsh political tone had anything to do with the shooting.
