  Gazprom intends to hike the price Georgia pays for gas (ITAR-TASS) A tentative agreement on the volume and price of Russian gas deliveries to Georgia was reached in Tbilisi yesterday. Russia's Gazprom natural gas monopoly also reiterated a proposal to buy a stake in Georgia's main natural-gas pipeline. The Georgian-Russian gas rapprochement comes amid an increasingly politicized dispute over a proposed Russian price hike for gas deliveries to Ukraine.

  The 9 founding member-states vow to work closely to strengthen 'peace, democracy, and prosperity on the European continent.' (AFP) A two-day forum aimed at promoting democracy and human rights in a region that spent decades under totalitarian rule concluded today in Kyiv with the official birth of the Community of Democratic Choice. In spite of assurances from founding members, the new grouping -- which comprises nine countries from the Balkan, Baltic, and Black Sea regions -- is perceived as an attempt to limit Russia’s influence on the post-Soviet area.

  East: Leaders Meet In Ukraine To Create New Regional Alliance

  (RFE/RL) The leaders of Georgia, Ukraine, Romania, the Baltic states, and other Eastern European nations are meeting in Kyiv to discuss ways to boost multilateral cooperation. The two-day forum is expected to mark the birth of a new regional grouping of nations called the Community of Democratic Choice. Some political experts see the upcoming alliance as a potential alternative to the Commonwealth of Independent States, which, 14 years ago, emerged from the rubble of the Soviet Union. But the viability of the new alliance has been questioned.

  Georgian President Saakashvili (file photo) (AFP) On 22 November, Ukrainians will mark the first anniversary of the Orange Revolution. A day later is the second anniversary of Georgia's Rose Revolution. Presidents Mikheil Saakashvili of Georgia and Viktor Yushchenko of Ukraine both rose to power on a combination of factors, including public anger at rampant corruption in the then-ruling regimes. But there are concerns that the new leaders in both countries have not done enough to fight graft or to revive the stagnant economies. Ordinary citizens seem somewhat disillusioned with their new leaders.
