Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has given assurances that the Russian military’s plans to establish an air base in Belarus is not aimed at Europe or as a response to European plans to deploy a missile-defense system.

Lavrov spoke in Warsaw at a press conference with his German and Polish counterparts, Guido Westerwelle and Radoslaw Sikorski.

“Russia and Belarus -- this is a unified military space,” Lavrov said.

He also said security in Europe was only possible “together with Russia.”

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu announced plans for the Russian base in Belarus last month.

Lavrov was in Warsaw for an informal meeting with the German and Polish foreign ministers to discuss a range of issues, including Russian cooperation with NATO, the European Union, and the situations in Syria and on the Korean Peninsula.

Based on reporting by ITAR-TASS and Interfax

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
