Seven U.S. Marines Killed In Iraq

2 August 2005 -- The U.S. military said that insurgents killed seven U.S. Marines in fighting in western Iraq.

The military said that the seven were killed yesterday. Six of them were killed in fighting near Haditha, about 200 kilometers northwest of Baghdad. The seventh was killed by a car bomb blast in Hit, 70 kilometers southeast of Haditha.

In other developments, reports say a suicide bomber blew up his car near a U.S. military convoy in central Baghdad today, causing an unclear number of casualties.

Earlier, attackers killed a senior police officer in Baghdad. In Al-Baquba, northeast of the Iraqi capital, a car bomb blast outside a police station killed a civilian and injured nine others.
