Suicide Bomber Targets U.S. Convoy In Baghdad


2 August 2005 (RFE/RL) -- News agencies report a suicide bomber blew up his car near a U.S. military convoy in central Baghdad today, causing casualties.

Police and medics said several people were killed but the number of victims was not clear. At least 24 people were reported injured in the blast.

One U.S. military vehicle was set ablaze and several other vehicles were also damaged.

The U.S. military had no immediate information on casualties.

Earlier today, suspected insurgents killed a senior police officer in Baghdad as he left home to go to work. His driver was injured in the attack.

And in Baquba, northeast of Baghdad, a car bomb at a police station killed a civilian and injured nine others.
