Baghdad, 1 January 2004 (RFE/RL) -- U.S. soldiers and Iraqi police are on high alert today after a car bomb devastated a Baghdad restaurant yesterday, killing five people.

The bomb injured more than 20 others, including three foreign journalists with the "Los Angeles Times."

Brigadier General Martin Dempsey, commander of the U.S. 1st Armored Division responsible for security in Baghdad, told reporters his unit had gathered intelligence on possible terror attacks, and is ready to deal with them.

In the latest attack, Iraqi police say the bomb was detonated by a suicide bomber, and that a second bomber was arrested inside the cafe, in the Karrada district of the capital.
