U.S. Military Battles Al-Sadr Forces In Baghdad, Kufa

(archive photo) 10 May 2004 -- The U.S. military says its troops have killed 35 insurgents in the past day during clashes in Sadr City, a poor Shi'ite neighborhood in Baghdad.

Military officials say 19 insurgents loyal to Shi'ite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr were killed yesterday. Officials say 16 more insurgents were killed in the neighborhood overnight and early today.

A spokesman for al-Sadr, Sheikh Abdul-Hadi al-Darraji, today said two people were killed and six more injured when U.S. forces destroyed an al-Sadr office in Sadr City. The U.S. military said it had no reports on casualties.

In Kufa, 12 people were reported killed in clashes between al-Sadr supporters and the U.S. military.

Earlier today, a South African, a New Zealander, and an Iraqi were killed in a drive-by shooting in the northern city of Kirkuk.
