10 Killed In Baghdad Blast Following Announcement

1 June 2004 -- At least 10 people were killed in an explosion in Baghdad today.

The blast, apparently caused by mortar or rocket attacks, occurred at the headquarters of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, located near one of the entrances to the "Green Zone" compound that houses the U.S.-led administration in Iraq.

The blast came shortly after United Nations envoy Lakhdar Brahimi confirmed the appointment of Ghazi Ajil al-Yawir as president of Iraq in a new interim government that is to assume power after 30 June.
