Release Of British Sailors In Iran Delayed

23 June 2004 -- The release of eight British sailors detained by Iran has been delayed until tomorrow as further negotiations are needed on the modalities of the handover.

British Embassy spokesman Andrew Dunn said British diplomats have been in discussions all afternoon and evening. He said that there is an agreement that the soldiers will be handed back, but it still has to be discussed how it will happen.

Dunn characterized the development as a "natural break" in the talks.

The eight sailors were detained along with their vessels in Iranian waters on 21 June.

Negotiations on the release of the eight are taking place in the southwestern Iranian city of Mahshahr.
