Russian Duma Calls Georgian Policies Short-Sighted

5 August 2004 -- Russia's State Duma today called the policies of the Georgian government amid rising tensions with its breakaway republics "short-sighted and without perspective."

The lower house called on the Russian president and Russian government to take "all adequate measures to normalize the situation" and ensure the security of Russian citizens in Georgian republics.

The Duma statement came after Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili yesterday threatened to open fire on any ship that approaches the coast of the separatist republic of Abkhazia, adding his warning was mainly meant for Russian tourists traveling to Abkhazia from nearby Sochi.

Yesterday, the head of the Duma committee on CIS affairs, Andrei Kokoshin, came under fire in another Georgian republic, South Ossetia.

The Duma said Saakashvili's statement was "openly aggressive" and said the Georgian government's measures to resolve the situations in Abkhazia and South Ossetia are "one-sided."
