Many Killed In Iraqi Violence

24 October 2004 -- Forty-nine Iraqi soldiers, two Iraqi youths, at least six other Iraqi civilians, and a U.S. diplomat are the latest reported victims of violence in Iraq.

Iraqi police say that 49 dead soldiers from the new Iraqi Army were found south of Baquba yesterday and today, victims of an apparent ambush by insurgents.

In Al-Fallujah, U.S. warplanes bombarded suspected guerrilla positions, killing at least five people and wounding some seven others. Local hospital workers said all those killed were civilians.

An Iraqi girl and an Iraqi boy were reportedly killed in crossfire between U.S. forces and insurgents in Samarra, north of Baghdad.

The U.S. State Department says that a U.S. diplomat -- an assistant regional security officer -- was today killed in a mortar attack near Baghdad airport.

The headless body of a man was found floating in the Tigris River today near the northern city of Kirkuk.
