Rakhmonov Satisfied With Tajik-Russian Ties


President Rakhmonov (file photo) 16 April 2005 -- In his annual address today, Tajik President Imomali Rakhmonov said strategic partnership with Russia has reached a "fundamentally new level."

Speaking at a joint session of both chambers of the Tajik parliament, Rakhmonov insisted the two countries have resolved all issues relating to the Russian military base on Tajik territory. He added that problems related to massive Tajik labor migration to Russia have also been settled.

According to Rakhmonov, Russian investment in the Tajik economy will reach up to $2 billion within five years.

Rakhmonov also warned that the recent overthrow of the government in Kyrgyzstan might have an negative impact on stability and investment in Central Asia.
